About Wood Heat Index
Wood Heat Index publishes modeled, county-level firewood price estimates for the United States. Firewood is an economically opaque commodity — non-standard units, huge regional variance, no central price reference — so we combine public government data (energy prices, climate, wood-heat prevalence) with published state surveys and, where available, real prices submitted by readers, into a single honestly-uncertain estimate per county.
The site is built and operated by one person, as a static site: every page is generated ahead of time from a documented model, not assembled on the fly. See the methodology page for how the estimate is built, what evidence tier each county falls into, and what the model doesn't know.
Wood Heat Index is not a marketplace, doesn't sell firewood, and doesn't take a cut of any sale. If it carries advertising, that's disclosed on the privacy page.
